DIY Valentine's Day Gifts: Giant Sweetie Biscuits for Your Sons

Most bakeries sell large, round biscuits. It will be a big treat for the boys when they each receive their own huge biscuit, decorated with lots of colorful sweets. The trick will be to ensure they don’t eat the whole thing all at once!

You will need:

Giant Sweetie Biscuit (see recipe below )

Royal Icing (see recipe below )

Selection of colorful sweets

- 2 medium-sized pizza boxes with window as baking paper
- digital photo of sweets
- glue


Makes: 2

Preparation time: 11⁄2 hours

Baking time: 20 minutes

Oven temperature: 180 degrees Celsius


230g (250ml) butter, softened 325g (375ml) brown sugar

2 large eggs

5ml vanilla extract

270g (500ml) cake flour

210g (500ml) quick-cooking oats 5ml baking powder

5ml bicarbonate of soda

40g (125ml) desiccated coconut


1. Beat the butter and sugar together until creamy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract. 

2. Stir in the flour, oats, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and a pinch of salt. Add in the coconut and stir well to combine. 

3. Divide the dough into two pieces. Roll into balls then flatten out on a lightly dusted surface and roll out to forma circle. Place something round (such as a plate) over the dough and trim the edges so that you have a neat circle. 

  1. 4.  Place the circles on greased and lined baking trays. Bake in a preheated oven for about 20 minutes, until golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly, then cut into w edges. 

  2. 5.   Cool completely on wire racks. Keep the wedges together. Decorate each wedge with sweets; stick them to the biscuits using royal icing (recipe below) Put small dots of royal icing around the edge of each wedge, if you prefer. 


Whisk 1large egg white lightly with a fork in a bowl. Add 7ml lemon juice and 150g sifted icing sugar. Stir together, then gradually stir in another 115-135g icing sugar. Continue until smooth and glossy.


Line the pizza boxes with baking paper and pack a biscuit into each box. To make the label, photograph a pile of sweets and then use your computer to w rite the recipient's name on the photo.
Print the picture and name in color and cut into a rectangle to fit the side of the pizza box. Stick it onto the box so that it also acts as a seal.

Now you're done! Arrange the cookies in a large plate and enjoy your colorful, sweet treats! Don't forget to clean up your mess with a dishwashing soap like Joy to remove all traces of grease and grime.
