Your Sartorial Survivor Guide to Packing

Your Sartorial Survivor Guide to Packing

By Kim Jones

Slowly but surely the little dots I’ve placed on my globe at home are growing in number, as are the stamps in my passport. It’s been a dream of mine (as it is of many) to spend more time travelling the world. Stumbling across those unique finds that end up being your very own travel time machine are my favourite part of immersing myself in an unfamiliar land. Online shopping is the most convenient for me, however when abroad, asking a local for “the closest vintage boutique“ is something I wholeheartedly embrace. Below are my favourite fab finds from my most recent trips abroad and tips on how to help them survive the weeks of travel in a packed suitcase until they are safely in their new home.

Boater's Hat

On a lazy day strolling around Brooklyn my eyes met a boater hat I couldn’t bear to leave behind. One of my favourite accessories, this hat has the red/navy ribbon around the crown that makes it so unbelievably suitable for summer days spent in town. TIP: Stuff your camisoles into your hat when you’re packing it. It helps retain the shape of the hat and saves space.

Red Vintage Sundress

After what could only be described as a food coma in Williamsburg, NYC and a subsequent trip to the Brooklyn Flea Markets, I spotted a red embroidered

minidress poking out of the plethora of vintage pieces. Without even fitting the dress I purchased it and it’s been a favourite since. TIP: Vintage pieces require special attention. I like to hand wash it with an aromatic fabric enhancer such as Downy Parfum Collection's Mystique to prevent you from smelling like the flea market you just visited.

White Pencil Skirt

This was a splurge of mine, I love the creaminess, luxury and femininity of white. The silhouette of a pencil skirt is one that I will always be drawn to no matter the occasion. TIP: As much as I love white, white does not love me. To prevent unwanted stains, turn your garments inside out and roll them when you pack them. If a spilt shampoo catastrophe occurs, you will have averted a serious crisis but it's always good to have Ariel as a contingency. Soaking your white skirt in water with Ariel is highly effective in removing unwanted stains.

Platform Heels

One of my favourite finds ever, these seemingly fragile heels add the perfect amount of drama and a whole lot of the wow factor. TIP: Obviously we can’t be lugging around shoe boxes around the world trying to protect our new purchase - suitcase space is a very valuable commodity. I suggest bidding farewell to the shoe box and stuffing socks into your new beauties to allow them to keep their shape and make it home safe and sound.
