This does not excuse the fact that we still do need to go for full on sun protection, especially with the sun's heat at its peak.
But unlike the thick, gooey, hardcore, high SPF and waterproof sunblocks that smell of coconuts we use for play, we need something light, non-greasy, and appropriate for daily use that will still keep sun-damage at bay.
Here's my wishlist for city-friendly sunblocks:
Minimum of SPF 30. A sunscreen with SPF 30 blocks 97% of the sun's UVB rays and is considered adequate protection. Feel free to use something with higher SPF if you cannot be sure you can keep on re-applying.
Light and absorbs easily. The most common reason why women skip sunscreen for daily use is that most suncreens are too thick, too white, and smells too much like summer. Ideally, I would go for a sunscreen that doubles/tripes as as a moisturizer/makeup primer. The best sunscreens should blend and soak into the skin without leaving a thick film, and can be worn seamlessly under makeup.
Oil-free and Non-greasy. Another issue most women take with with sunscreen is that it leaves the face shiny, prone to breakouts and feeling warm and heavy. An oil-free and non-greasy sunscreen lets skin "breathe" and should have a mattifying effect.
The great news is, there are many skin care and sun care brands in the market today which can fill our need, whatever our budget. Ask family and friends with the same skin type as yours for recommendations.
Because if there's something we shouldn't miss out on this summer, make that year round, it's the sunscreen.
